How it was won

1. 1118 km to go

   Monte Terminio thins the break

   Hesjedal takes the sprint on the climb itself. Colbrelli, twenty-five today, is the first to pay for the pace and slide out the back of the leading group.

2. 266 km to go

   Slagter takes the bonus

   Tom Jelte Slagter jumps out of the break at Lioni for the second sprint and three bonus seconds, and keeps going alone.

3. 312 km to go

   Tiralongo, third time lucky

   Twice today Paolo Tiralongo has attacked and twice been hauled back. On the Passo Serra he goes again, slowly and inexorably pulls away, and catches Slagter with eight kilometres left.

4. 4At the line

   The oldest man to win a Giro stage

   Tiralongo crosses alone in San Giorgio del Sannio, grinning and thumbs up, at thirty-seven. A hundred metres from the line behind him, Aru jumps and takes one second out of Contador.
