At the start

Fifty-nine kilometres alone

Fabio Aru wears pink for the first time, nineteen seconds up on Alberto Contador, who went down in the Jesolo crash on a shoulder already strapped. Richie Porte refused the rollers afterwards with a swollen knee. André Greipel, Michael Matthews, Greg Henderson and Tom Boonen have all gone home rather than start. Today is thirty flat kilometres to Conegliano and then thirty through the Prosecco hills.

   Kiryienka fastest already

   The favourites are still warming up when the Belarusian posts the quickest time at the first check. Sky, whose Giro has been miserable, suddenly have a stage in their hands.

2. 224 km to go

   Over San Pietro di Feletto

   The climb through the Prosecco hills is where a 59-kilometre time trial stops being a test of power and becomes a test of judgement. Kiryienka is fastest here too.

3. 3At the line

   1:17:52, and pink comes back

   Kiryienka's time stands: twelve seconds on Luis León Sánchez and fourteen on Alberto Contador. Third is more than enough — the Spaniard takes the maglia rosa back from Aru.
