How it was won

  1. 104 km to go

Forty-eight kilometres an hour, and then a break

The peloton comes out of Marostica at nearly 48kph and nothing sticks until halfway up La Fricca, where Visconti splits a ten-man move apart and goes over the top with Zakarin and Intxausti.

  2. 51 km to go

    Porte's week gets worse

On the tougher second climb Richie Porte is dropped, and Rigoberto Urán goes with him. Two of the three men expected to challenge Contador are out of the picture on a Sunday in May.

  3. 16 km to go

    Two more seconds at Pinzolo

Contador has no teammates left after Kreuziger was caught out on the descent, so he does it himself — a surprise sprint for second at the last intermediate sprint and two bonus seconds. Kangert reacts too late.

  4. 1 km to go

    Trofimov's kilometre

With a kilometre left Yuri Trofimov goes, banking on Aru and Contador watching only each other. For 500 metres it looks like working.

  5. At the line

Landa takes it at 450 metres

Mikel Landa realises the stage is escaping, jumps, and catches Trofimov with 450 metres left. Behind, Contador beats Aru for third and the bonus seconds, and stretches his lead to 2:35.
