The road
How it was won
- 135 km to go
Dumoulin abandons
At the feed zone the man who wore pink for the first week climbs off. Saddle sores have been eating at him since the weekend and thirteen minutes went on Tuesday; his Giro is over.
- 30 km to go
FDJ wiped out
With just under 30km to go a crash takes down most of the FDJ team including Démare, sends IAM's Leigh Howard into a roadside stream, and catches Pozzovivo and Scarponi — a furious chase that will still cost Pozzovivo time.
- 19 km to go
Kruijswijk splits the race
The last man of the break is caught by a Kruijswijk-led peloton, and the Dutchman goes straight over the top for the mountain points — an effort that shatters the bunch and puts Nibali, Valverde and Chaves alone on the descent.
- 13 km to go
Amador goes, Jungels chases
Thirteen kilometres out Andrey Amador attacks the select group and the maglia rosa, wary of the Costa Rican's proximity on GC, tracks him down himself. Kruijswijk's answer comes too late.
- At the line
Ulissi's second
Lampre haul the gap to seven seconds and Diego Ulissi jumps across on his own. The impetus in the chase dies, Jungels opens the sprint into Asolo and is no match at all.
