How it was won

  1. 188 km to go

    Landa slips away

Sky's leader is dropped on the third-category Passo della Collina barely twenty kilometres in. Teammates drift back to pace him; the deficit grows past six minutes anyway.

  2. 147 km to go

    Sky's Giro ends

Ahead of the second climb Mikel Landa climbs off and into the team car. The pre-race favourite is gone before the race has even reached its first mountain finish.

  3. 40 km to go

    Preidler jumps the break

At the second intermediate sprint with 40km left, Georg Preidler attacks the thirteen-man group and opens a substantial lead on the run to the big climb.

  4. 17 km to go

    Astana blow it apart

The sixteen-kilometre Pian del Falco tears the break to pieces — Ciccone, Pirazzi and Cunego forge clear — while behind, Astana hit the front in numbers, drop Dumoulin and distance the maglia rosa Brambilla two kilometres from the summit.

  5. 10 km to go

    Ciccone flies the descent

The neo-pro is the most adept of them all on the technical plunge and starts the last rise with a clear gap, Rovny his nearest threat at over half a minute.

  6. At the line

Ciccone wins, pink changes hands by a second

Giulio Ciccone takes a spectacular win on his Grand Tour debut. Behind, Brambilla fights all the way down the mountain but crosses a single second too late — the maglia rosa passes to his Etixx teammate Bob Jungels.
