How it was won

  1. 166 km to go

Thirty-seven go on the queen stage

Six climbs and a mountains jersey still up for grabs make the first hour frantic. Forty-five kilometres in the peloton finally splits and thirty-seven riders go up the road.

  2. 115 km to go

    Cunego holds the Pordoi

Berlato paces the first great pass for his leader, and when Denifl attacks for maximum points near the summit he finds Damiano Cunego more than a match for him.

  3. 104 km to go

    Lรณpez goes early

Sky's David Lรณpez makes an audacious early bid on the Passo Sella and pushes on alone for the summit points, the Movistar-led bunch already more than seven minutes adrift.

  4. 41 km to go

    The Giau eats Plaza

Rubรฉn Plaza has almost two minutes at the front of the race when the fearsome Passo Giau begins. Siutsou leads the pursuit with Atapuma, Preidler and Roche; by the time they reach him the Spaniard is finished, and Atapuma leads Siutsou over four minutes clear of the favourites.

  5. 19 km to go

    Amador saves his pink

Preidler bridges back to the leaders on the long descent off the Giau while, behind, Andrey Amador claws his way back to the favourites in the nick of time before the last categorised climb of the day.

  6. 2 km to go

Atapuma is caught, two kilometres out

The Colombian starts the five-kilometre rise to Corvara with 21 seconds and defends it up the steep opening slopes โ€” but on the dip and the gentler gradients Kruijswijk, Chaves and Preidler close him down with two kilometres left.

  7. At the line

    Chaves and Kruijswijk announce themselves

Preidler opens the sprint from 200 metres before the left-hander into Corvara, but the two men who dropped every favourite on the day are simply stronger. Esteban Chaves takes the queen stage from Steven Kruijswijk, and the Giro suddenly belongs to neither Nibali nor Valverde.
