1. 149 km to go

   The break is hunted down

   The peloton wakes with 60km to go and the reaction is merciless: Brändle cracks first and the rest of the escape is swallowed on the third-category San Pietro.

2. 230 km to go

   Fifteen go clear into the final 30km

   Dupont and Bonnafond attack in tandem off the descent and spark a flurry behind. Fifteen riders form up — Ulissi, Conti, Wellens, De Marchi, Jungels among them — twenty seconds up and heading for the last climb.

3. 310 km to go

   Ulissi breaks free

   Conti pulls off at the foot of the final climb and hands it over. Ulissi subdues Pirazzi's cameo, then simply rides away from the break at the summit with ten kilometres to run — the maglia rosa suddenly within reach.

4. 49 km to go

   The peloton snaps

   Domenico Pozzovivo kicks first and brings Nibali, Valverde and Dumoulin with him. Landa is briefly caught out just as the bunch comes apart, and Astana take up the pursuit on the descent.

5. 5At the line

   Ulissi survives to Praia a Mare

   With the chase falling apart behind him, Diego Ulissi holds a handful of seconds through the flamme rouge and takes Italy's first win of the race ahead of Dumoulin and Kruijswijk.
