How it was won

  1. 103 km to go

Seven minutes over the Bocca della Selva

The break tops out the day's first serious test with seven minutes, Bisolti leading over while Cunego collects the remaining points from the bunch to keep his blue jersey.

  2. 86 km to go

The race wakes on the wet descent

Rain turns the technical plunge off the Selva into a race of its own. The gap to the leaders collapses to just over a minute, gaps open in the bunch, and Hesjedal is briefly caught out.

  3. 19 km to go

6:30 at the foot of Roccaraso

Lampre flirt with a chase for Ulissi and then think better of it; Giant, with no GC threat up the road, are happy to let it ride. The five leaders reach Castel di Sangro and the base of the final climb with six and a half minutes.

  4. 15 km to go

Wellens rides it like a time trial

Ligthart peels off a kilometre in, his work done. Didier attacks, and the canny Tim Wellens lets others chase before making his own move — arms tucked over the bars, a private time trial to the summit, Didier shrinking behind him.

  5. 4 km to go

    Dumoulin's surprise

Nibali makes the big move with 3.5km left and Sky bring him back. As the Sicilian eases, Tom Dumoulin — who has insisted all week he is not a GC rider — attacks and goes clear with Pozzovivo and Zakarin.

  6. At the line

    Wellens takes Roccaraso

Tim Wellens wins the first Grand Tour stage of his career at the summit while, behind, Dumoulin comes across a couple of seconds down and leaves Roccaraso with his pink jersey stronger than ever.
