Dumoulin back in pink, the longest day

Praia a Mare, and pink is back on Tom Dumoulin after a Calabrian afternoon that finally sorted the standings: Jungels and Ulissi at twenty seconds, Kruijswijk at twenty-four, Nibali at twenty-six, Valverde at thirty-one. Today is the longest stage of this Giro, well over two hundred rolling kilometres to Benevento, and it is a sprinters' day only for the sprinters who get there.

   Caught on the circuit

   The four-man break is reeled in with six kilometres left as the race hits the twisting finishing circuit. Kittel, in trouble all day over 233 rolling kilometres, is already out the back.

   Greipel through the wreckage

   Taaramäe loses his grip on a corner 1.5km out and scatters the lead-out trains. Ferrari waits in vain for Modolo, Colbrelli hesitates on the front, and André Greipel surges away inside 300 metres to win by lengths in Benevento.
