1. 1191 km to go

   Three parts on the Svolte di Popoli

   Gretsch, Küng and McCarthy surge away on the day's first climb and the peloton splits into three behind them. Wellens beats Cunego to the fourth-place points and takes the blue jersey off him.

2. 25 km to go

   Kittel's puncture

   Five kilometres from the line the fastest man in the race punctures out of the sprint, and Lotto Soudal move up for the other German.

3. 3At the line

   Greipel finds a way through

   Seemingly boxed out of it in the twisting finale, Greipel follows Modolo through the traffic and kicks past Caleb Ewan on the line — six Italians in the top ten and not one of them a winner.
