The road
How it was won
- 176 km to go
Thirteen away, and one of them is dangerous
The move goes almost from the flag and it contains Gianluca Brambilla, less than two minutes down on GC, with Matteo Trentin alongside him to do the work. The bunch splits into three chasing it, and Dumoulin misses the first group.
- 64 km to go
The GC teams intervene
Movistar, LottoNL-Jumbo and Astana come to Giant-Alpecin's aid and the five-minute gap begins to tumble, sparking the break into open warfare.
- 18 km to go
Brambilla on the white roads
Montaguti goes first on the Alpe di Poti; the baby-faced Brambilla catches and passes him on the dirt, and the third-place finisher from Strade Bianche is exactly where he wants to be. Behind, the maglia rosa is having a jour sans and slides out of the group.
- 11 km to go
Nineteen seconds
Montaguti brings the gap down to nineteen seconds on the descent and, for a moment, the win looks live — until the road flattens and Brambilla's rouleur strength decides it.
- At the line
Brambilla's first Grand Tour win
Gianluca Brambilla arrives in Arezzo more than a minute clear of Montaguti with Moser third, an all-Italian podium. Valverde leads the favourites home 1:41 back with Dumoulin's pink under real threat.
