At the start

The centenary Giro opens in Sardinia

The 100th Giro d'Italia begins on the north coast of Sardinia, and it begins two riders short: Bardiani's Stefano Pirazzi and Nicola Ruffoni were sent home before the start after non-negative tests. Everything else is level. Two early climbs decide who wears the mountains jersey tonight, the drag over San Pantaleo with 22 kilometres left should not trouble a sprinter, and the first maglia rosa waits in Olbia.

How it was won

  1. 3 km to go

    Pöstlberger jumps

In the chaos of the lead-out, Lukas Pöstlberger flings himself off the front in the final kilometres, catching the sprinters napping.

  2. At the line

    A surprise in pink

Lukas Pöstlberger holds off the charging bunch to steal the opening stage of the 100th Giro in Olbia — and pulls on the very first maglia rosa.
