The road

At the start

Pöstlberger in pink, mountains already

Lukas Pöstlberger jumped the sprinters in Olbia and wears the first pink jersey of the centenary Giro, four seconds up on Caleb Ewan and six on André Greipel. Day two turns inland and climbs to a thousand metres: the Genna Silana, long and shallow rather than steep, tops out 47 kilometres from Tortolì. Wind is forecast on the coast road down, and the fast men's teams must decide how far they can hold on.

   Genna Silana thins it out

   The long drag of the Genna Silana shells the pure sprinters and puts the fast men’s teams under pressure high above the Sardinian coast.

2. 216 km to go

   The chase claws it back

   On the plunging run to the coast the survivors regroup and the lead-out trains reassemble for a reduced sprint.

   Greipel powers home

   André Greipel proves strongest in the sprint into Tortolì to take the stage.
