How it was won

  1. 138 km to go

    War on the Mortirolo

On the fearsome Mortirolo a big move forms, Mikel Landa and four Sky riders among the numbers as the queen stage of the centenary Giro ignites.

  2. 78 km to go

    Over the Cima Coppi

The race crosses the mighty Passo dello Stelvio, the roof of this Giro, into thin and freezing air.

  3. 23 km to go

    Dumoulin caught out

Disaster for the maglia rosa: caught on the wrong side of the road as he stops for a nature break, Dumoulin is suddenly isolated and forced to chase alone with only the tifosi for company.

  4. 19 km to go

    The truce shattered

On the Umbrailpass the gentlemen’s agreement collapses: Zakarin attacks, and Quintana drags Nibali and Pozzovivo clear, hunting down the last breakaway men.

  5. 11 km to go

    Nibali strikes

A kilometre from the top Nibali attacks; only Quintana can follow, and on the descent the Shark shakes even him off to join Landa alone.

  6. At the line

    Nibali wins in Bormio

Vincenzo Nibali edges Mikel Landa in a two-up sprint in Bormio for Italy’s first win of the race, while Dumoulin limits the damage to cling to pink.
