How it was won

  1. 18 km to go

    A motorbike sparks chaos

At the very foot of Blockhaus a parked motorbike triggers a huge crash, felling Geraint Thomas, Mikel Landa, Thibaut Pinot and Steven Kruijswijk before the real climbing has even begun.

  2. 10 km to go

    The pink jersey slips

As the 13.5km climb ramps to nearly 10 per cent, race leader Bob Jungels loses the wheel and the maglia rosa begins to slip away.

  3. 6 km to go

    Down to eleven

The selection is brutal: suddenly only eleven riders remain, Quintana surrounded by his Movistar men as Nibali calmly shuts down each acceleration.

  4. 2 km to go

    Quintana snaps the elastic

Where the gradient bites at 14 per cent Quintana surges once more, and this time Nibali cannot follow — the 2016 champion cracks, and Pinot then Dumoulin ride away from him.

  5. 1 km to go

    Alone under the flamme rouge

Quintana springs out of the saddle under the red kite with 30 seconds in hand, the stage all but won.

  6. At the line

    Quintana conquers Blockhaus

Nairo Quintana solos to a commanding win atop Blockhaus and into the maglia rosa, huge gaps opening between all the favourites behind.
