The road
At the start
The Giro begins outside Europe
Jerusalem, and for the first time a Grand Tour starts outside Europe. Only 9.8 kilometres against the clock, out of the city and back into it, but enough to set the first order of things. Tom Dumoulin defends the title he won last May and is the obvious favourite. Chris Froome, here to hold all three Grand Tours at once, crashed on his reconnaissance this morning and starts cut and bruised.

Dumoulin strikes first in Jerusalem
The defending champion Tom Dumoulin wins the opening time trial in Jerusalem and pulls on the first maglia rosa, already opening fault lines — Froome, cut and bruised from a recon crash, loses time even to the climbers.
