How it was won

  1. 107 km to go

    A 25-man break

After a busy, fast start a large group of 25 finally clips clear in the Dolomites, Ciccone and Visconti among the aggressors.

  2. 65 km to go

    Woods lights the Tre Croci

EF set up a long-range Michael Woods attack on the Passo Tre Croci, pulling the break's advantage down towards a minute.

  3. 29 km to go

    Aru cracks on Sant'Antonio

Fabio Aru is an early GC casualty, dropping 30km from home on the Passo di Sant'Antonio as the mountains bite.

  4. 15 km to go

    Yates attacks the Costalissio

On the irregular Costalissio, 18km out, Yates accelerates and a kilometre later goes solo, Froome cracking and slipping over a minute behind.

  5. At the line

    Yates soloes into Sappada

Yates stretches clear on the final rise for his third stage win in pink — the first man since Simoni in 2003 to do so — as the chase dithers behind.
