The road
How it was won
- 85 km to go
The break forms
Conti and Pedersen spark the move on the Monte di Ragogna, a group building six minutes — but with Mitchelton-Scott massed on the front, it will not be the escapees' day on the Zoncolan.
- 43 km to go
The break fractures on Passo Duron
The tricky Passo Duron splinters the escape as Sunweb and Astana lift the tempo behind, cutting the gap and setting up the finale.
- 20 km to go
Conti leads over Sella Valcalda
Valerio Conti takes maximum points over the penultimate climb with only Barbin for company, a minute clear as the descent to Ovaro and the door to hell await.
- 4 km to go
Froome detonates on the Zoncolan
After a monstrous shift from Wout Poels on the lower ramps, Froome attacks 4.3km from the summit of the brutal Monte Zoncolan — and there is simply no response from Yates, López or Pozzovivo.
- At the line
Froome conquers the door to hell
Froome crosses the line alone atop the fearsome Zoncolan, its 22 per cent ramps behind him, clawing back precious time on the maglia rosa in a statement of intent.
