How it was won

  1. 39 km to go

    A thirty-strong break

A huge move goes clear on the road to the volcano, with Esteban Chaves marked among them — a handicap start that will shape the day.

  2. 5 km to go

    Astana's infernal pace on Etna

On the black slopes of Etna, Astana set a brutal tempo that cracks Meintjes and Formolo and cuts the peloton to twenty, before Chaves attacks solo on the steepest ramp with 5.5km to go.

  3. 2 km to go

Yates throws caution to the wind

With 1.5km to go the maglia rosa contenders can only watch as Simon Yates surges away and opens twenty seconds — a first, emphatic show of his brilliant form.

  4. At the line

    Chaves wins, Yates into pink

Yates catches Chaves inside the final 600m and sportingly ushers his team-mate across for the win, taking the maglia rosa himself.
