At the start

Back up, to San Martino

Damiano Cima stole yesterday from a three-man break by inches, and Ackermann took the ciclamino jersey back off Démare for his trouble. At the top nothing has changed in two days: Carapaz, Nibali at 1:54, Roglič at 2:16. Valerio Conti, who wore the maglia rosa the best part of a week, did not start. The race turns north again, 151 kilometres over the Passo San Boldo to San Martino di Castrozza.

How it was won

  1. 34 km to go

    The break stretches clear

The eleven-man move gains more than nine minutes by the cat-4 Lamon, where local man Boaro digs on the descent — reeled back in as the break refuses to be generous.

  2. 10 km to go

    Chaves whittles the break

On the long final climb to San Martino di Castrozza, Chaves probes again and again; Bidard and Serry cling on longest as the WorldTour trio pull clear of the rest.

  3. 3 km to go

    The decisive dig

With 2.7km to go Chaves unleashes his strongest attack yet, and this time there is no answer — a year of illness and lost form falling away with every pedal stroke.

  4. 1 km to go

    Chaves' emotional win

Esteban Chaves solos across the line for a hugely popular victory, resurrecting both his season and Mitchelton-Scott's Giro.
