At the start

The last mountains, and the hardest

One day of climbing left, and it is the biggest of the Giro: 194 kilometres from Feltre over the Cima Campo, the Passo Manghen, the Passo Rolle and the Croce d'Aune, 5,754 metres in all, finishing up Monte Avena. Carapaz holds 1:54 on Nibali and 2:16 on Roglič, and Verona's time trial suits the Slovenian better than either of them. Whoever wants this Giro has to take it today.

How it was won

1. 161 km to go

   Ciccone bridges on the Rolle

   Attacks fly on the Passo Rolle and Ciccone bridges across to sweep up yet more mountains points; Movistar shepherd the maglia rosa 2:25 back, biding their time for the double ascent to come.

2. 210 km to go

   Landa's vicious surge

   On the Croce d'Aune Landa launches a savage attack and splits clear of the pink-jersey group; Roglič is forced to chase to protect his podium, and Nibali diplomatically sends Pozzovivo to help.

3. 37 km to go

   Nibali hunts down the descent

   Majka clips a pedal and crashes on the frantic drop, forcing Sivakov to grab the brakes; up front Nibali unleashes his descending genius to reel Landa back in, Carapaz locked to his wheel.

4. 4At the line

   Bilbao wins the queen stage

   On Monte Avena Pello Bilbao takes his second stage of the race ahead of Landa and Ciccone, while Carapaz drives the pace to squeeze still more time out of Roglič.
