The road

At the start

Seventeen kilometres to Verona

Monte Avena settled the maglia rosa: Carapaz still leads Nibali by 1:54 and there is not enough road left to take it off him. The last step of the podium is another matter — Landa is third at 2:53, Roglič fourth at 3:16, and today is a 17-kilometre time trial over the Torricelle and down into the city, on ground that suits the Slovenian and nobody else in that fight. It finishes outside the Arena di Verona.

   Carapaz rolls down the ramp

   Around the streets of Verona, the maglia rosa needs only to stay upright to make history, a nation holding its breath behind him.

2. 27 km to go

   The Torricelle climb

   The 4.5km Torricelle is the day's only obstacle; at its summit Roglič holds 20 seconds on Landa in the fight for third, though nine down on Haga's stage-best mark.

3. 3At the line

   Carapaz makes history

   Chad Haga's early mark stands all afternoon and the American takes the stage outside the Arena di Verona; Roglič, nine seconds slower, does enough to snatch third overall from Landa by eight. But the day belongs to Richard Carapaz, the first Ecuadorian ever to win a Grand Tour.
