At the start

Orbetello, and a road on the water

Nothing moved overnight: Roglič holds pink by nineteen seconds from Yates and twenty-three from Nibali, and eight riders sit inside forty seconds of one another. Pascal Ackermann pulls on the maglia ciclamino for the first time. From Vinci it is 220 kilometres south, and the last of them run out along the thin strips of land across the Orbetello lagoon, where there is nothing at all to break the wind.

   Poggio l'Apparita

   The day's lone breakaway is long gone as Ciccone clips over the only climb to stretch his mountains lead — but ahead lies the wind-blown Orbetello lagoon and a nervous, wary peloton.

2. 29 km to go

   Carapaz's costly mechanical

   On the exposed strips of land across the lagoon, with the crosswinds gnawing at the bunch, Richard Carapaz suffers a mechanical; a swift bike change and teammates can't save him from losing 46 seconds.

3. 35 km to go

   Ineos lose Geoghegan Hart

   At a pinch-point five kilometres out, Tao Geoghegan Hart is swept up in a crash and held fast by the flowing peloton, dropping from seventh to 57th overall — 1:28 gone in a heartbeat.

4. 4At the line

   Viviani relegated, Gaviria gifted the win

   Elia Viviani crosses first in the tricolore but is relegated for an irregular sprint, handing stage 3 to Fernando Gaviria on his Giro return.
