Dumoulin lines up hurt

Roglič is still in pink, thirty-five seconds up on Yates now that Carapaz's win at Frascati has shuffled everything behind. Three men are gone from yesterday alone. Tom Dumoulin takes the start with his knee strapped after sliding out on that roundabout six kilometres from the line — one of the two men most expected to win this race, riding wounded. A short 140 kilometres to Terracina, in the rain.

   Dumoulin abandons

   Just after the neutralised sector the tendon pain from his stage-4 crash overwhelms Tom Dumoulin; the pre-race favourite climbs off into a team car, his 2019 Giro over before the mountains have even begun.

2. 2At the line

   Ackermann doubles up

   In rain-soaked Terracina, with GC times already safely taken, Gaviria opens early and Ackermann pounces off his wheel to take a second stage of the race.
