The road
At the start
The Giro without Dumoulin
Tom Dumoulin is gone, climbing off yesterday on the road to Terracina with the knee he wrecked at Frascati; seven riders have now left the race. Roglič's lead is unchanged — thirty-five seconds on Yates, thirty-nine on Nibali — and the road south is 238 kilometres long, with a fourth-category climb at Coppa Casarinelle seventeen from San Giovanni Rotondo to give a breakaway something to hope for.
How it was won
- 203 km to go
Roglič crashes, the break goes
Thirty-five kilometres in, Roglič hits the deck and picks up road rash; his Jumbo-Visma sit up to nurse him along, and in that instant a thirteen-man move is handed the day.
- 17 km to go
Masnada and Conti attack
On the long, barren Coppa Casarinelle with 28km to go, Fausto Masnada moves and only Valerio Conti follows — everyone else marks Amador and misses the split, letting the pair open thirty seconds.
- At the line
Masnada wins, Conti in pink
The two Italians ride all the way to San Giovanni Rotondo; Masnada takes the stage while Conti, after 200km up the road, pulls on the maglia rosa.
