At the start

Two teams go home, the race goes on

The rest-day tests took two entire teams out of the Giro: Jumbo-Visma and Mitchelton-Scott have withdrawn en masse, Steven Kruijswijk and Michael Matthews among them. What is left rides on. Almeida still leads, with Wilco Kelderman up to second at 30 seconds and Bilbao third. Today has the profile of a Flanders classic — short, sharp climbs all afternoon, three of them inside the last forty kilometres.

How it was won

  1. 130 km to go

    A hard break over Chieti

After a frantic opening the day's move goes clear over the climb at Chieti, Peter Sagan among the strongmen chasing a first win in over a year.

  2. 11 km to go

    Sagan attacks

On the final ascent of Tortoreto Sagan jumps clear of his breakaway companions, backing his descending and power to hold them off.

  3. At the line

    Sagan soloes home

After 177 breathless kilometres Peter Sagan takes a long-awaited solo victory, finally rewarding an aggressive Giro with a stage win.
