The road
At the start
Campiglio, on Pantani's mountain
Almeida is still there: seventeen seconds on Kelderman, with Hindley and Geoghegan Hart three minutes down and the road running out. Today climbs to Madonna di Campiglio, where Pantani won in 1999 and was thrown off the race the next morning over a haematocrit reading. Over 5,000 metres of climbing to get there — Monte Bondone in the middle of it, the Passo Durone before the last ascent.
How it was won
- 87 km to go
Break builds on Bondone
A large breakaway carves out seven minutes over Monte Bondone, Guerreiro hoovering up mountain points to take the blue jersey back off Visconti.
- 9 km to go
O'Connor attacks the climb
Eight kilometres from Madonna di Campiglio, Ben O'Connor jumps clear of the break's remnants, chasing redemption after being caught the day before.
