At the start

Fifteen seconds, and a Classics day

Piancavallo very nearly took the maglia rosa off João Almeida: he cracked in the last kilometres and leads Wilco Kelderman by fifteen seconds now, with Jai Hindley and yesterday's winner Tao Geoghegan Hart just under three minutes back. Today belongs to the Classics riders — Monte di Ragogna three times on a punishing circuit above San Daniele del Friuli, and nobody will want to chase.

How it was won

  1. 40 km to go

    Attacks on Ragogna

Over the repeated ramps of Monte di Ragogna the breakaway fractures, Jan Tratnik and Ben O'Connor forcing clear on the steep, punishing circuit.

  2. 13 km to go

    Tratnik goes over the top

On the final climb Jan Tratnik attacks O'Connor over the crest, backing himself on the descent into San Daniele del Friuli.

  3. At the line

    Tratnik holds for the win

Tratnik grips his slender lead to the line for a first Grand Tour stage, O'Connor denied by a handful of seconds in San Daniele del Friuli.
