At the start

Piancavallo, and the real mountains

Ganna won the time trial and Almeida survived it, stretching his lead over Kelderman to 56 seconds and over everybody else past two minutes; the Portuguese has now worn pink for twelve days. Today the Giro finally goes high — the Sella Chianzutan, the Monte Rest, the Pala Barzana, and then Piancavallo, where Pantani won alone in 1998 and where the last kilometres touch 14%.

How it was won

  1. 42 km to go

    Dennis lights the fuse

Rohan Dennis attacks from the break over the Forcella di Pala Barzana and time-trials the valley alone, softening up the race before Piancavallo for his leaders.

  2. 10 km to go

    Sunweb detonate the GC

On the lower Piancavallo, 9.5km out, Sunweb's Oomen and Hamilton rip the group apart - Bilbao, Fuglsang, Pozzovivo and McNulty all shelled in seconds.

  3. 9 km to go

    Nibali cracks

The relentless Sunweb pace is too much even for Vincenzo Nibali, who is spat out the back 8.9km from the summit as his overall hopes drain away.

  4. 7 km to go

    Almeida in the red

As the gradient bites toward 14 per cent, maglia rosa Almeida begins to crack, clinging desperately as Kelderman, Hindley and Geoghegan Hart edge clear above him.

  5. 2 km to go

    Kelderman closes on pink

Kelderman drives the leading trio upward, clawing back 41 seconds on Almeida and slashing the Portuguese rider's overall lead to just fifteen seconds.

  6. At the line

    Geoghegan Hart wins at Piancavallo

Tao Geoghegan Hart kicks past Kelderman for his maiden Grand Tour stage atop Piancavallo, announcing himself as a genuine contender as the Giro reshapes around him.
