The road
At the start
Ganna in pink, a ramp at Agrigento
Filippo Ganna took 22 seconds out of the entire field in Palermo and wears the first maglia rosa; Geraint Thomas is 23 down, so Ineos have both. Miguel Ángel López is already gone, hurt in a crash on the opening time trial. Today starts in Alcamo rather than Monreale and rolls south across Trapani to Agrigento, where the road rears up beneath the Valley of the Temples — not a sprinter's finish, not quite a climber's.
How it was won
- 111 km to go
Sicilian hills stir
The break scraps for space over the early climb of Santa Ninfa as a lumpy Sicilian stage rolls toward its uphill finale in Agrigento.
- 29 km to go
The favourites gather
With the road tilting toward the Valley of the Temples, the GC teams mass at the front, wary of the steep ramp waiting in Agrigento.
- At the line
Ulissi powers home
On the sharp rise to the line Diego Ulissi launches early and holds off Peter Sagan, giving Italy a second win in two days atop the climb to Agrigento.
