The road
At the start
Almeida in pink, a day for the sprinters
Etna rewrote everything. João Almeida, twenty-two years old and on his first Grand Tour, is in the maglia rosa; Jonathan Caicedo won up there and sits level with him on time; Wilco Kelderman is fourth. Geraint Thomas, who went down on a stray bidon before the racing had even started, lost over ten minutes. Today is the last Sicilian day: one climb, then sixty-five kilometres of coast road.

Into Villafranca Tirrena the sprint is desperately close, but Arnaud Demare throws his bike past Peter Sagan and Davide Ballerini to take the win by a whisker.
