At the start

Thomas goes home, 225km of Calabria

Geraint Thomas does not start — the hip he landed on before stage 3 has finished his Giro. Almeida keeps pink with Caicedo two seconds behind him and Pello Bilbao at 39. Today is the third-longest stage of the race, 225 kilometres pinballing across the foot of Italy, with the first-category Valico di Montescuro twelve kilometres from the line and a plunge off the top into Camigliatello Silano.

1. 1114 km to go

   Ganna up the road

   In cold, driving rain Filippo Ganna - the biggest engine in the peloton - is improbably away in the breakaway, clearing the early Calabrian climbs with the escape.

2. 212 km to go

   Solo over Montescuro

   On the category 1 Valico di Montescuro, echoing Eros Poli over Ventoux, Ganna drops his breakaway companions and crests alone with a mountain to descend and a time trial to ride.

3. 36 km to go

   Time-trialling to the line

   Ganna flings himself down the sodden descent and time-trials the closing kilometres, the pursuit never getting close.

   The world champion soloes into Camigliatello Silano for one of the most improbable mountain wins the Giro has seen, a time-trialist conquering a summit day.
