The road
At the start
Two seconds, and Coppi country
Geraint Thomas leads the Giro by two seconds from Primož Roglič, with his own teammate Tao Geoghegan Hart third at five and João Almeida fourth at 22: the top four inside half a minute. Twenty-six riders have gone home. Today runs 219 kilometres from Camaiore up the Tyrrhenian coast into Liguria and Coppi country, over the Passo del Bracco and the Colla di Boasi, then down through the Gavi vineyards to Tortona.
How it was won
- 85 km to go
Geoghegan Hart crashes out
Alessandro Covi slides on the wet Colla di Boasi descent and the podium men behind have nowhere to go; Tao Geoghegan Hart hits the deck hard and is stretchered into an ambulance, his Giro over.
- 20 km to go
Rex holds on
Laurens Rex pushes on alone into the final 20km, but Trek and Movistar bear down and reel him in inside the last 5km.
- At the line
Tortona
Pedersen jumps too early and is swamped; Cavendish, then Ackermann and Milan surge past, Ackermann taking it by centimetres in a photo finish.
