At the start

Evenepoel gone, Thomas in pink

Remco Evenepoel won the Cesena time trial and then tested positive for COVID: the maglia rosa passes to Geraint Thomas without a wheel being turned, two seconds ahead of Primož Roglič and five ahead of Tao Geoghegan Hart. Eight more riders are missing this morning, Stefan Küng and Rigoberto Urán among them. Today is 197 kilometres over the Passo delle Radici and down to the Tuscan coast at Viareggio.

How it was won

  1. 127 km to go

    Vlasov abandons

A key GC contender is gone: Aleksandr Vlasov, dropped from the peloton early, climbs off sick after 70km on another sodden, freezing day.

  2. 110 km to go

    Passo delle Radici

Bais tops the long climb to shore up his blue jersey, and on the treacherous wet descent Bahrain go boldly on the offensive, sending Caruso up the road.

  3. 76 km to go

    Ineos strike back

At the bottom of the descent the road kicks up again at Monteperpoli, and Ineos wipe out the Bahrain move in the blink of an eye. Over the top the peloton is down to forty riders.

  4. At the line

    Viareggio

The three escapees cling on against a panicked chase and Magnus Cort out-sprints Gee and De Marchi to complete the full set of Grand Tour stage wins.
