- Friday 17 May 2024
- 180 km
- 195 m climbed
- Won by Jonathan Milan
The road
At the start
Flat to Cento, if the wind allows
Julian Alaphilippe soloed into Fano to complete his set of Grand Tour stage wins; above him nothing moved, and Pogačar is still 2:40 up on Daniel Martínez. Fabio Jakobsen is the latest sprinter to go home. Today is the flattest day of the race — 180 kilometres from Riccione to Cento with 195 metres of climbing in the whole of it — and the only thing that can complicate a sprint is the wind off the Romagna plain.
How it was won
- 62 km to go
Ineos light the crosswinds
On the exposed roads past Conselice, Ineos hit the front and the rare sight of Giro echelons forms in the wind, catching out none other than sprint favourite Milan.
- 43 km to go
Milan claws back
Lidl-Trek launch a furious chase with Milan driving himself, and after 20km in the wind he is dragged back to the front group, energy spent but hopes alive.
- At the line
Milan's hat-trick
Gaviria opens early but Milan surges off Consonni's wheel and scorches past for his third stage win, tightening his grip on the maglia ciclamino.
