At the start

Up the Passo Sella from the gun

Pogaฤar's fifth stage win, at Monte Pana in the rain, pushed Geraint Thomas off the second step: Daniel Martรญnez is runner-up at 7:18, the Welshman third at 7:40. Today has hardly a flat metre in it. The Passo Sella begins almost from the flag and is this year's Cima Coppi; then come the Rolle, the Gobbera, and two ascents of the Passo Brocon, the second of them to the finish line.

How it was won

  1. 99 km to go

    Pellizzari takes the Cima Coppi

On the Passo Sella, the roof of this year's Giro, Pellizzari outsprints Quintana for the Cima Coppi as a big break finally forms on the descent.

  2. 61 km to go

    DSM's baffling chase

In a strange tactical move DSM haul the whole break back on the Gobbera, then sit up โ€” prompting Ghebreigzabhier and Steinhauser to counter straight back off the front.

  3. 34 km to go

    Steinhauser goes solo

Midway up the first ascent of the Passo Brocon, Steinhauser drops Ghebreigzabhier and strikes out alone, building a lead the peloton cannot ignore.

  4. 2 km to go

    Pogaฤar's late dig

Pogaฤar accelerates clear of the GC group two kilometres from the top, but eases once the win is out of reach, content with another handful of seconds.

  5. At the line

    Steinhauser's maiden win

The German holds his advantage to the summit for a first professional victory on his Grand Tour debut, denying the maglia rosa a fourth mountain win in a row.
