The first summit finish

Jai Hindley, winner here in 2022, crashed out on the road to Naples yesterday. Mads Pedersen still wears pink with Primož Roglič at seventeen seconds and UAE's three — McNulty, Del Toro, Ayuso — packed inside thirty-five. Today is the hardest day yet: 3,390 metres of climbing and the first uphill finish of the race, the long haul up to Tagliacozzo.

   A break goes clear on the first uphill finish of the Giro, the climb to Tagliacozzo looming.

2. 28 km to go

   The GC group thins

   On the final climb the GC teams ramp the pace and the maglia rosa group is whittled down.

3. 32 km to go

   Ayuso attacks

   Juan Ayuso accelerates on the steepest ramps and powers clear, stamping his authority on the first mountain showdown.

4. 41 km to go

   Rivals concede

   Behind, the overall contenders mark each other and lose precious seconds to the flying Spaniard.

   Ayuso wins at Tagliacozzo

   Ayuso wins atop Tagliacozzo and launches himself up the general classification.
