At the start
Nessebar, and a Giro that starts abroad
The Giro leaves Italy for the sixteenth time in its history and the second year running, opening with three days in Bulgaria. From Nessebar on the Black Sea it is 147 flat kilometres south to Burgas, and whoever wins the sprint pulls on the first maglia rosa. Jonathan Milan is the fastest man here on paper; Groenewegen, Groves, Lund Andresen, De Lie and Paul Magnier all fancy it.

With 22km to go the two-man escape of Tarozzi and Sevilla is fist-bumped back into the fold, leaving the sprinters' trains to fight for position on the wide roads into Burgas.

Inside the final 500 metres the bunch, spread right across the road, crashes in a heap behind the fast men. Ahead of the chaos Paul Magnier powers to the opening stage win and pulls on the first pink jersey of the 2026 Giro.
