The road

At the start

Magnier in pink, and three climbs

Paul Magnier won the opening sprint and leads the Giro by four seconds from Tobias Lund Andresen, with Diego Pablo Sevilla in the mountains jersey. Today runs 221 kilometres inland to Veliko Tarnovo over three categorised climbs, the last of them the Lyaskovets Monastery Pass ten kilometres from the line. Magnier knows the odds, and says the legs will do the talking.

1. 127 km to go

   Break caught before the finale

   The Polti pair Sevilla and Maestri are finally brought back with 27km to go, setting up a showdown over the late Lyaskovets Monastery Pass.

2. 222 km to go

   Crash halts the race

   A heavy pile-up 22km out sweeps up Gee-West, Yates and Storer and forces a brief neutralisation; Jay Vine cannot continue. Racing resumes for the final, tense 18km.

3. 311 km to go

   Vingegaard's first dig

   On the Monastery Pass, 11km from home, Vingegaard launches his first attack of the Giro. He crests the climb with Pellizzari and Van Eetvelt for company and the trio open twenty seconds on the plunge down.

4. 4At the line

   Caught in the final kilometre

   The chase claws the leaders back with 500 metres left, and out of the regroup Guillermo Thomas Silva sprints to victory in Veliko Tarnovo to take the race lead.
