How it was won

1. 1173 km to go

   Straight up the Envalira

   The hardest opening of the race: 22.6km of climbing to 2,408 metres from the gun, and the escape has to be earned at altitude before a very long descent out of Andorra.

2. 220 km to go

   Seven get away

   With the break bickering, a select group of seven pulls clear inside the last 20km — Sagan, Matthews, Impey, Durbridge, Van Avermaet, Boasson Hagen and Dumoulin. It is now a race for the stage among them.

3. 37 km to go

   Impey hammers Sagan

   On the two-kilometre climb into the Revel finishing loop Daryl Impey attacks again and again, trying to soften the world champion for his sprinter. Sagan closes every one of them himself.

4. 4At the line

   Matthews' first Tour stage

   Impey leads out, Van Avermaet launches from the back inside 200 metres, and Michael Matthews reacts fastest of all to take the win — Sagan, for once, unable to come round.
