The road
How it was won
- 166 km to go
Forty riders up the road
A ferocious opening on the Port de la Bonaigua puts some forty men into the break — and prompts the ailing Contador to attack from the bunch, with Valverde marking him and Sky refusing to give the Spaniards a metre.
- 102 km to go
Contador climbs off
On the long drag of the Port del Cantó the two-time champion drifts back to his car again and again. With 102km still to ride he stops, unclips and gets in — the Tour of the man who came for a third title is over.
- 42 km to go
Sky turn the screw on La Comella
De Gendt crosses first and presses on alone while, behind, Sky's climbers replace the rouleurs and the acceleration flings almost eighty riders into the gruppetto.
- 28 km to go
De Gendt stalls on the Beixalís
The steep ramps stop Thomas De Gendt almost dead and the rest of the break simply ease past him. Pinot comes through for the mountain points at the summit.
- 12 km to go
Dumoulin jumps in the hail
Torrential rain turns to hail on the road to Arcalís and Tom Dumoulin picks that moment to leave his breakaway companions, twelve kilometres from the line. Within minutes he has a minute.
- At the line

The Dutchman holds 38 seconds over Rui Costa and Majka at the ski station. Behind, Henao lights the yellow jersey group in the last 5km, Froome answers with Quintana glued to him, and Dan Martin goes twice inside the final two kilometres.
