How it was won

1. 1165 km to go

   Fourteen men into the gale

   The stage has already been cut short and the Ventoux finish moved down to Chalet Reynard by howling wind, and still the attacks fly from kilometre zero. Fourteen get clear; Sagan, Pinot and Barguil are among those caught on the wrong side of the split.

2. 242 km to go

   Blown off the road

   On the descent of the Col des Trois Termes, Simon Gerrans is blown over in a turn and takes Sky's Ian Stannard and Luke Rowe down with him.

3. 314 km to go

   Greipel's head start

   The break still has nearly nine minutes at the foot of the mountain when André Greipel, of all people, powers away with 14km to go. The boomerang comes back quickly: he is caught and dropped, leaving De Gendt, Pauwels and Navarro alone.

4. 42 km to go

   Froome goes with 1.6km left

   Quintana has been shut down twice by Poels and shakes his head. Then the yellow jersey attacks himself, Porte alone able to follow, and Mollema drags himself across from the Colombian's group.

5. 51 km to go

   The scene the Tour had never seen

   Inside the final kilometre the crowd closes in outside the barriers and swallows the road. A camera motorbike is halted dead; Porte slams into it, Mollema squeezes past, and the race leader's Pinarello is destroyed underneath him. Chris Froome abandons the wreck and runs up Mont Ventoux in cleats, in yellow, while a neutral bike that does not fit is pushed at him and the whole Tour hangs on a jury decision.

6. 6At the line

   De Gendt wins, Froome keeps yellow

   Thomas De Gendt outfoxes Pauwels and Navarro to take the stage at Chalet Reynard. Froome crosses 1:14 down on Quintana's group — until the commissaires reverse the gaps for the chaos and hand him back the maillot jaune.
