A time trial, the morning after Nice

The Tour wakes to the attack in Nice and rides anyway — black armbands, a minute's silence, no ceremony. Chris Froome came off Ventoux and a jury decision with forty-seven seconds on Adam Yates, fifty-four on Nairo Quintana and fifty-six on Bauke Mollema, and today he can build on it: 37 kilometres through the Gorges de l'Ardèche, opening with a seven-kilometre climb. Pinot and Gerrans do not start.

   Climbing off the ramp

   The 37km test from Bourg-Saint-Andéol starts with a seven-kilometre climb to the Plateau du Laoul — no easing in, and the specialists' rhythm is broken from the first minute.

2. 217 km to go

   Down the Col du Serre

   The descent into the Gorges de l'Ardèche is technical enough to reward the risk-takers, and Porte's fast opening — ten seconds off Dumoulin at the first check — begins to unravel here.

3. 3At the line

   Dumoulin dominant at Pont-d'Arc

   On a sombre day after the attack in Nice, Tom Dumoulin climbs out of the gorge to stop the clock at 50:15, beating Froome by 1:03 and Oliveira by 1:31. There is no podium music and no sponsors — only a minute's silence and the jerseys carried out together.
