How it was won

1. 174 km to go

   Astana's war of attrition

   Twelve and a half kilometres at 8.2 per cent, driven by an Astana team riding for Aru's podium. Van Garderen is the first big casualty; Yates is shelled over the top; Froome and Sky sit and wait.

2. 251 km to go

   Majka seals the polka dots

   Rafał Majka leads the break over the Montée de Bisanne for 25 points and a second King of the Mountains title. On the wet descent Rui Costa and Rolland slip clear; Rolland crashes hard, remounts and rejoins.

3. 325 km to go

   Froome down, Porte held up

   The yellow jersey group swallows the break with 25km to go, and in the rain the race leader hits the deck — Froome will ride the rest of the day in a torn jersey. Porte is caught behind a separate crash and needs three teammates to pace him back.

4. 410 km to go

   Bardet escapes on Mont Blanc

   On the lower slopes of the final climb, with ten kilometres to go, Romain Bardet slips out of the yellow jersey group and goes hunting the lone leader.

5. 57 km to go

   The duel with Costa

   Bardet reels in Rui Costa with seven kilometres left and immediately takes up the pace-making, the Portuguese riding his wheel and the maillot jaune a minute behind.

6. 62 km to go

   Aru counters inside two kilometres

   Porte digs again with 2km left, Quintana jumps on him, and Aru drags the group across before countering to snatch a few metres for his podium bid.

7. 7At the line

   Bardet wins at Saint-Gervais

   Romain Bardet powers away from Costa in the closing kilometres to take the stage by 23 seconds over Rodríguez and Valverde, and moves to second overall — a French rider on the Tour podium at Mont Blanc.
