The road
How it was won
- 102 km to go
Thirty men and a Tour-changing gap
A huge group forms on the Colombière — Nibali, Sagan, Kreuziger, Izagirre, Zakarin, Pantano and two dozen more. De Gendt takes maximum points at the top with the peloton 4:44 back, and Kreuziger is briefly on the virtual podium.
- 62 km to go
Sagan's shift for Kreuziger
The world champion drives the front group for kilometre after kilometre to protect his teammate's GC gamble, and only sits up with 62km to go once AG2R and Astana have taken over behind.
- 18 km to go
Nibali attacks the Joux Plane
With 18km left the Sicilian leaps from the chase group while Pantano and Alaphilippe, 5:30 up on the bunch, trade blows ahead of him. He catches them with 15.5km to go and pulls away.
- 13 km to go
Izagirre arrives at the summit
Ion Izagirre climbs up from the chasers, collects Pantano and Alaphilippe, and the pair reel in a tiring Nibali just before the top. Pantano leads over; Froome's group is three minutes back and safe.
- 9 km to go
Down the wet new tarmac
It is not a summit finish. On freshly repaved, rain-slicked hairpins Izagirre commits where the others hesitate — Pantano's bike slides away from him and he saves it at the last instant — and the Basque simply flies.
- At the line
Izagirre wins in Morzine
Ion Izagirre takes the biggest win of his career off the descent, ahead of Pantano and Nibali. Behind him Chris Froome rides safely home with his third Tour de France all but sealed.
