The road
At the start
Gaviria in yellow on his debut
Fernando Gaviria won the opening stage on his first day at the Tour de France and wears yellow, four seconds up on Peter Sagan. Chris Froome, who slid onto the verge with five kilometres to go, has already lost ground. Today runs 183 kilometres inland through the quiet Vendée — one fourth-category climb at Pouzauges after 28 — to La Roche-sur-Yon, which last saw the Tour in 1938.
How it was won
- 2 km to go
Chaos in the final 2km
A crash on the tight right-hander 2km out takes down much of the peloton, Gaviria among the victims, splintering the sprint.
- At the line
Sagan into yellow
Bora-Hansgrohe use their numbers in the reduced front group to deliver Peter Sagan his tenth Tour stage win in La Roche-sur-Yon — and the maillot jaune.
