A truce on the road to Gap

Ewan won in Nîmes and nothing changed above him: Alaphilippe in yellow, Thomas at 1:35, Pinot at 1:50, Bernal at 2:02. Jakob Fuglsang crashed out of ninth place yesterday, taken to an ambulance over his own objections. Today's 200 kilometres to Gap have breakaway written all over them — three Alpine stages follow, and nobody with anything to lose will spend a watt on the Col de la Sentinelle.

1. 134 km to go

   The decisive split

   With 34km to go Nils Politt's acceleration shatters the big break; Trentin, Van Avermaet and Asgreen are among ten riders who forge clear on the road to Gap.

2. 214 km to go

   Trentin attacks

   Trentin punches clear with 14km remaining, just before the Col de la Sentinelle, taking a ten-second buffer onto the climb.

3. 39 km to go

   Over the Sentinelle

   Trentin stretches his lead to half a minute up the Sentinelle; Asgreen — in the move only to police it for Alaphilippe — sets off in pursuit over the summit but can make no inroads.

4. 4At the line

   Trentin solos into Gap

   Trentin rides into Gap 37 seconds clear for his third career Tour stage, while the GC men, in an unspoken truce, roll home more than twenty minutes down.
