At the start

The Iseran, the roof of the Tour

Quintana won at Valloire and Bernal moved up to second, ninety seconds off a yellow jersey Alaphilippe has now worn for a fortnight; Thomas is at 1:35, Kruijswijk 1:47, Pinot 1:50, and Bardet has taken the polka dots. Today is short and savage: over the Col de l'Iseran, at 2,770 metres the highest paved pass in Europe and the last bonus-second summit of the race, then a final climb to Tignes.

How it was won

1. 151 km to go

   Pinot's heartbreak

   The cruellest blow of the race: lying fifth overall, Thibaut Pinot drops back with a torn thigh muscle and, bandaged and in tears, hugs a teammate before climbing off on the Montée d'Aussois.

2. 26 km to go

   Thomas lights the Iseran

   As Poels pulls off 6km from the top of the mighty Col de l'Iseran, Geraint Thomas attacks and forces the GC contenders to chase on the highest road of the Tour.

3. 35 km to go

   Bernal launches

   Bernal sits briefly on a struggling Alaphilippe, then launches; one by one his companions fall away, Adam Yates the last man on his wheel as the young Colombian rides into the virtual yellow jersey.

4. 4At the line

   Yellow at the summit, then chaos

   Bernal takes the 8-second bonus alone atop the Iseran, a minute up on Thomas and two on Alaphilippe — moments before hail, ice and a landslide in Tignes force the stage to be neutralised, the times frozen at the summit and Bernal in yellow.
