Alaphilippe in yellow for the first time
Julian Alaphilippe attacked on the Côte de Mutigny, won at Épernay and pulled on the first yellow jersey of his career; Wout van Aert is twenty seconds back, Bernal at forty and Thomas at forty-five. Today hands the sprinters one of their few clear chances on a Tour built for climbers — 213 flat kilometres east to Nancy, two fourth-category bumps that trouble nobody, and a 1,500-metre finishing straight.

Late fireworks on the Maron
On the Côte de Maron, 15km out, Sunweb try to hurt the sprinters and Lilian Calmejane slips away solo, but the escape is doomed on the run into Nancy.

Alaphilippe himself helps set the lead-out, and after a patient wait into the headwind Elia Viviani opens his sprint at 100m to finally claim a maiden Tour de France stage.
