At the start

Seven climbs, and the Puy Mary

Marc Hirschi finally has his stage and the overall is still frozen: Roglič, Bernal at 21 seconds, Martin at 28, Pogačar seventh at 44. On paper today is the hardest day of the race — seven categorised climbs and 4,400 metres of it, more than any other stage of this Tour — and it ends on the Pas de Peyrol, the wall up to the Puy Mary, where the last kilometre is the steepest.

How it was won

1. 186 km to go

   Crash splits the bunch

   With 86km to go a crash brings down Bardet, Mollema and Quintana; Mollema abandons, and Bardet rides on concussed before he too will be forced out.

2. 211 km to go

   The break battles over Neronne

   EF and Bora tear the breakaway apart over the Col de Neronne, Schachmann going solo before the survivors regroup for the vicious final wall of the Puy Mary.

3. 3At the line

   Martínez conquers the Puy Mary

   On the savage ramps of the Pas de Peyrol, Dani Martínez drops Schachmann and Kämna to win atop the Puy Mary, as Pogačar nips Roglič for a couple of seconds behind.
