Stage 10
Issoire
- Tuesday 11 July 2023
- 167 km
- 3,131 m climbed
- Won by Pello Bilbao
The road
At the start
Out of the rest day, into the Puys
The Puy de Dôme took eight seconds off Jonas Vingegaard's lead and no more: he leads Tadej Pogačar by 17, Jai Hindley by 2:40. Today the Tour sets out from the Vulcania volcano park and climbs from the flag — five categorised climbs through the Chaîne des Puys, then a long drop into Issoire. It is a day for the breakaway, and getting into that breakaway on roads like these is the hardest part.
How it was won
- 55 km to go
Neilands goes solo
With 55km to go Krists Neilands throws down a lone attack from the break as Alpecin pour on the power behind, the day boiling down to a chase across the Massif Central.
- 3 km to go
Neilands caught
Neilands looks down at his legs for more but the chasers reel him in with 3km left, unable to relent with a fast group closing behind.
- At the line
Issoire
Georg Zimmermann attacks at the red kite but Pello Bilbao latches on and out-sprints him for the first stage win of his career, and the bonus with it.
